Mexico has just inaugurated the Maya Train. The hope is that tourists will be more interested in seeing ancient sites in the area.

Reported from Mexcio News Daily on Wednesday (1/24/2024), Mexico can now welcome more than 42 million tourists in 2024 to enjoy the Maya Train. The train is located on the Yucatan Peninsula with dozens of Mayan heritage sites.

Miguel Torruco Marques, head of the Tourism Ministry, said the project was developed by the federal government during the administration of President Andres Lopez Obrador. It is targeted at post-pandemic tourists who are looking for fresh and innovative tourism products.

However, the Mayan Train has experienced some disruptions after a month of operation. Ticket sales were suspended over the weekend and there was a mechanical problem on Friday in the section between Campece and Cancun. This delayed the train.

“The Mayan Train offers a unique experience that allows visitors to connect with nature and learn about the archaeological sites of the Mayan civilization,” Miguel said.

The Maya Train will start operating on December 15, 2023. The train line has a 1,554 km track from Campeche to Cancun. The train has a ticket price of Euro 62 or around Rp. 1 million.

As of January 8, the Maya Train has transported 15,500 people in 144 trips. On average, there are 800 tourists transported every day. Most of them are domestic tourists. Well, in 2024, Mexico hopes that more foreign tourists will try the train
